Things to Do in Laas Geel

French archaeologists discovered Laas Geel in 2002—one of archaeology's biggest recent finds. This complex of caves sits 55 kilometers northeast of Hargeisa in Somaliland's rocky landscape, containing some of Africa's best-preserved Neolithic rock art with paintings that survived an estimated 5,000 to 11,000 years. The art here impresses for good reason. Cattle, dogs, giraffes, and human figures appear in striking detail, painted in rich ochres, whites, and reds that kept their color thanks to the dry climate and natural rock overhangs. You'll see the daily lives of ancient pastoralists who once roamed this region—and standing before these works in their original setting hits differently than any museum display.
